What Is Nia Dance Fitness?

Nia—Neuromuscular Integrative Action—is a holistic fitness practice that integrates body, mind, and soul through a carefully curated blend of Martial Arts, Dance Arts, and Healing Arts.

Its movement vocabulary draws from:

Martial Arts
Tai Chi, Tae Kwon Do, and Aikido

Dance Arts
Jazz, modern dance, and Duncan dance

Healing Arts
Yoga, the Feldenkrais Method, and the Alexander Technique

Together, these influences create a rich movement experience that can be powerful, playful, expressive, grounded, graceful, and restorative.

Nia invites you to kick off your shoes and delight in the sensations of all the wonderful ways the body was designed to move. Annie guides established Nia routines while giving you the freedom to adapt each movement, explore the music, and do it your body’s way.

Through joyful, barefoot movement, Nia supports flexibility, agility, mobility, stability, balance, and strength—all while delivering an energizing dose of sweaty fun.

Dance Without Judgment

There is no performance, competition, or pressure to look like anyone else. Annie offers guidance and structure while warmly welcoming each student’s creativity, individuality, and personal way of moving.

Choose Your Own Intensity

You choose the size, speed, power, range, and intensity of your movements. Nia may feel gentle and grounded in one moment, then dynamic and aerobic in the next.

Move Your Whole Self

Nia engages more than muscles. Music, rhythm, sensation, attention, emotion, imagination, and self-expression become part of the experience.

You Do Not Have to Be a Dancer

You do not need dance training, memorized choreography, or perfect coordination to enjoy Nia.

Annie offers gentle guidance, key movements, and creative prompts—but the dance belongs to you. You are invited to adapt each movement, explore the music, and do it your body’s way.

There are no mistakes to hide and no judges to impress.

Nia gives you creative permission to move with your own personality, imagination, and individuality. Some students arrive ready for an energetic workout. Others want to loosen their bodies, lift their spirits, and reconnect with the simple pleasure of moving to music.

Both belong in the same class.

Come exactly as you are. Listen to your body. Let your own dance unfold.

What to Expect During Class

Each Nia class follows a thoughtfully designed progression that helps you arrive in your body, awaken your senses, build energy, explore expressive movement, and gradually return to stillness.

Annie teaches established Nia routines while blending clear guidance with the freedom to adapt the movements and do them your body’s way.

1. Arrive and Connect

Begin by bringing your attention to your body, the room, the music, and the sensations of movement. This opening gives you time to settle in, become present, and connect with how your body feels that day.

2. Warm and Mobilize

Rhythmic movements gradually awaken the joints, increase circulation, and prepare the body to move with greater ease, range, and energy. Annie introduces key movement patterns while encouraging you to remain attentive to comfort and sensation.

3. Build Energy

The music and movement become increasingly dynamic and aerobic. You choose how large, fast, powerful, or gentle your movements become, allowing the class to meet your energy and movement level that day.

4. Express and Explore

Move with freedom, playfulness, strength, emotion, imagination, and individuality. Annie provides the structure of the routine while giving you creative permission to interpret the music and express the movements in your own way.

5. Cool Down and Integrate

The pace gradually slows through grounding movement, stretching, breath, and mindful attention Class closes by giving the body time to settle, notice the effects of the practice, and carry that renewed sense of awareness into the rest of the day.

More Than a Workout

Nia is a joyful, whole-body fitness practice that supports physical conditioning, mental presence, emotional expression, and connection with others.
