Internal Martial Arts applies primarily to the styles of Tai Chi, Baguazhang and Xing Yi, but the concepts can also be applied to other styles.

 

The way that Internal Martial Arts differs from more external styles of Martial Arts (like Karate, Taekwondo, etc.) is that it focuses on building strength from the inside out rather than the outside in. The movements use the muscles and tendons that connect to the bones rather than the muscles that are seen. In doing this it uses the whole body as one integrated unit which can create more overall power. This strength takes a longer time to develop, but it is deeper and more in harmony with the ways that the body is meant to move.  Instead of directly opposing an opponent, it teaches the student to redirect an opponent's force.  It works to help the student to have a clear mind, a relaxed body, and to listen with both.

 

Students can continue to practice well into later life because it uses whole body mechanics in a way that promotes health rather than abusing their body in the process. Internal Martial Arts uses Chi-Gung exercises to strengthen Chi, or vitality of the body, based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, which work to keep the whole body healthy and prevent illness before it exists.

 

Internal Martial Arts works to harmonize the mind and body through moving meditation. It stregnthens Chi and makes for a healthier life, more positive outlook, a kinder attitude, and a more focused mind.

 

The meaning of the name Dragon Phoenix comes from the concept of Yin and Yang, which is the root of what we study. When done correctly, movements should resemble those of a Dragon and Phoenix moving through the clouds.

 

Yin and Yang combine to create a symbol that represents opposites and how they are interconnected and dependent on one another. Each contains the seed of the other within and together they create harmonious union. The two working together are greater than each by itself. It is a symbol that is always changing and moving. It also represents all of the principles found in Internal Martial Arts.

 

The Dragon is a mythical Chinese creature that represents power and strength.

The Dragon is Yin and its element is water.

The Phoenix is a mytical Chinese creature that represents virtue and peace.

Phoenix is Yang and its element is fire.

Together they create balance and harmony.

 

The styles of Martial Arts taught at this school all find balance with each other. Tai Chi embraces water through spiral power,  Bagua moves as a drgaon riding the wind. Pao Choi teaches Fa Jing explosive power. Mantis carries the fundamentals that build a strong foundation.
